A barcode is required by most distributors (Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, physical retail). For physical CDs we recommend placing the barcode on the back tray card — use our CD builder to add it to your jewel case or digipak design.

FAQ

Do I need an official UPC/EAN for my release?

Yes, for any release distributed commercially — Spotify, Bandcamp premium, physical retail. You can buy one from GS1 or get one via your distributor. Don't reuse random numbers.

What's the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

EAN-13 is international (13 digits); UPC-A is North American (12 digits). Most distributors accept either; a UPC-A can be represented as an EAN-13 with a leading zero.

Is the check digit auto-computed?

Yes — enter the first 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A) and we compute the check digit for you.

Can I use Code 128?

Code 128 is great for serial numbers and inventory, but is NOT valid for retail distribution — distributors require EAN or UPC.
